The Top 25 Of The Last 10

Wow. Can you really believe that in just a few hours, the year that was 2009 and the decade that was the '00s will be over? It seems like not too long ago I was at a party marking the end of the '90s. Where does all the time go?

I've made it no secret of my affection for movies over the last several years. But while a lot of bloggers and critics and other sorts of people will do lists of their best and worst things, I've always steered clear of that...

...until just now.

Like with MySpace and Facebook and Twitter and blogging in general, I decided to cave in and comprise my list of the top 25 best movies of the '00s. These are in no particular order, and these are all one guy's personal opinion. So bear that in mind while reading, won't you?

So here we go:
  1. American Psycho
  2. The Dark Knight
  3. Watchmen
  4. Iron Man
  5. Sin City
  6. The Wrestler
  7. Rocky Balboa
  8. O Brother, Where Art Thou?
  9. No Country for Old Men
  10. Black Snake Moan
  11. Mystic River
  12. Gran Torino
  13. Changing Lanes
  14. Collateral
  15. The Incredibles
  16. WALL-E
  17. Corpse Bride
  18. One Hour Photo
  19. Hard Candy
  20. Monster
  21. King Kong
  22. Requiem for a Dream
  23. The Others
  24. Star Trek
  25. Battle Royale
Like I said, these are all personal opinion, and they're in no certain order. And I could probably turn this into a Top 30, Top 40, or even Top 50 if I'd wanted to, because I had plenty of movies I could have included on the list.

But that's what I'm going to stuck with. Do you agree? Disagree? Leave a comment, because this sort of thing is always up for discussion.

That's enough of me talking about movies, though. There will be plenty of time for that tomorrow, the first day of 2010, when I post the 2009 "Sutton At The Movies" Achievement Awards. Keep your eyes peeled for that, and I hope you all have a safe and prosperous new year.

Elementary, My Dear Watson

You know, I wanted to write this post a few hours ago. But I got a PS3 for Christmas, and I ended up getting so wrapped up in playing Batman: Arkham Asylum that I ended up sitting in front of my TV for way too long and forgot to hit the blog until right now. What's wrong with me?

I'd actually wanted to do this post to talk about how I saw Sherlock Holmes about twelve hours ago. I didn't know what to expect of it, since I've never read any of the books that feature the titular detective. And you know what? I enjoyed the movie a lot. It was a heck of a lot of fun. It does run about fifteen minutes too long, but other than that, I don't have any real complaints. The four main members of the cast - Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Rachel McAdams, and Mark Strong - are all fantastic, and Guy Ritchie does a great job directing. The action is great, and the comedy is handled very well (and is funny, too).

So in short, I'd totally recommend Sherlock Holmes. It's a very entertaining movie, definitely worth seeing. On that tried-and-true Sutton Scale, I'd put at about four stars. Did it make me want to go read any Sherlock Holmes books? Not particularly. But it definitely made me want to see the movie again.

Merry Christmas!

I hope everyone's had a very merry Christmas so far. And for those of you who don't celebrate Christmas, I hope you're having a happy whatever it is you celebrate. I know I've had a great day today. :)

And to celebrate such a great holiday, I'm proud to bring you - my ever-faithful readers - the final entry into my December marathon over at "Sutton at the Movies." I promised a whopper of a movie, and I hope that my review of Santa Claus Conquers the Martians will be that whopper. So go check that out, and enjoy your evenings. And once again, merry Christmas and happy holidays.

Two More For The Christmas Marathon

My Christmas marathon over at "Sutton at the Movies" has entered its third week, and with it, I've got two new reviews for your reading pleasure. The movies are two that I liked a lot as a kid: Home Alone and Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. They haven't really held up as well as I'd hoped over the last two decades. But then, when, as an adult, you look on something as an adult that you enjoyed in childhood, it's always kinda hard to see it through those younger eyes.

And with those reviews, we're entering the final stretch of the first annual "S@TM" Christmas movie marathon. Like I said in last week's post, the final review will be posted on Christmas Day, so make sure you keep an eye out on Friday. It'll be a doozy of a movie, I'll tell you that much.

The Christmas Marathon Rolls On

Remember when I said I'd be posting reviews of Christmas movies all month? I hope you do, because I just posted this week's entry into my December marathon.

This week's review is my favorite version of A Christmas Carol and one of my favorite Christmas movies period, Scrooged. I'd been waiting for the right time to review it, and I figured that now would be as good a time as any to do so.

So go click the link and check the review out, then stay tuned for next week. Next week's gonna be a big one, because I've got two reviews lined up. And after those two, you'll want to stick around for the grand finale on Christmas Day. So keep an eye on "Sutton at the Movies" this month, won't you?

The Wait Is Killing Me

Seems like things have been moving awfully slowly lately. I'm not complaining or anything, since it gives me more time to enjoy the Christmas season. But as much as I love this time of year, my inner child is starting to get a wee bit cranky. Christmas Day can't get here any quicker, can it?

I'm so conflicted. I want to enjoy the build to the big day, but the anticipation is already killing me. And if I'm like this now, what will I be like in three weeks when Christmas actually gets here?

I'm A Real Twit

While you're here, I figured I'd mention the little thing I set up before leaving to see Ninja Assassin this afternoon. It's something I dreaded, something I swore to myself that I'd avoid at all costs... I now have my own Twitter account.

Yes, horror of horrors, I'm actually on Twitter. I was avoiding it like the plague, because I thought (and still think) that it's just another dumb Internet trend that won't last more than a few years at best. But I thought, "What the heck, I might as well." Because I'm totally weak and kinda stupid too.

So if you're also on Twitter and want to follow whatever random thoughts might pop in my head at any given time (beyond the nonsense I post on either of my blogs), feel free to click here and check it out.

I'm so ashamed of myself. Must I cater to every stupid trend that comes along?

I Know Kung Fu (Or Maybe I Don't)

I've knocked out a few reviews for "Sutton at the Movies" lately, but it's actually been a while since I've been to a theater to see something new. I missed the whole month of November because there wasn't really anything I wanted to see. Well, there was a movie out that I wanted to see, but I didn't get a chance to see it until today.

The movie in question: Ninja Assassin.

Yeah, the movie's ads looked kinda corny, but what's wrong with wanting to see a kung fu movie once in a while? So since my dad and I have been kinda bored lately, we headed out to our favorite movie theater and checked it out.

Turns out it wasn't the insanely awesome thrill ride I'd hoped it would be. For a movie sold on nothing but fight scenes, those fight scenes weren't all that exciting. I'm sure they would have been, though, if the cinematography wasn't so murky. I honestly had no idea what was going on. It was like they shot a Jason Statham movie in a cave with just flashlights, and the cameraman and editor were having seizures. But what I could see, though, had some embarrassingly fake-looking CGI, which I couldn't help but laugh at. I couldn't even hear the dialogue correctly because I think the theater was having a problem with their sound system. So it was like watching a Jason Statham movie while being dizzy and with my ears plugged. So yeah.

I guess if I had to give it a rating on my usual scale of five, I'd probably give it two and a half stars. I'll more than likely think differently of it after I have the chance to see it on DVD a few months and hopefully be able to enjoy it. But as it stands, it's barely mediocre, and not really as entertaining as I'd wished it was. And that's a shame.

Getting Into The Christmas Spirit

Can you really believe that December is already here? Geez, it feels like the year just started, and now it's almost 2010. Where does all the time go?

But anyway, I figured I'd do something special for the month of December. I've been writing reviews of Christmas movies for the past few Christmases now, but I figured I'd do something a little bigger this year. Since the coming one marks the first Christmas for the Blogger edition of "Sutton at the Movies," I decided to celebrate the holiday all month long!

All this month, I'll be posting a new review of a Christmas movie every week, culminating in one on the big day itself. And to get the ball rolling, I've already got a review up for your reading pleasure. Starting things off is the sequel to last year's Christmas review, Silent Night, Deadly Night Part 2. Yes, I actually hunted down this movie and wrote a review of it. I'm a little surprised about it myself.

So if you will, please go check that out, and have an awesome day. Don't let the Yuletide season get you too stressed out, okay?
