The Master Approves

I'd apologize for the lack of regular fresh content here, but not posting has become more routine than anything else. Why apologize for the norm? I just wish I had more things to talk about, really.

There are a few things I could briefly discuss, however. For starters, my dad and I caught the remake of Total Recall last week. I'd have posted about it earlier, but I just caught up working on a review of it for my other blog, and I'd forgotten all about this one. (The full review is still pending, by the way.) The long and short of the Total Recall remake is that, while it pales in comparison to the 1990 original, the movie is still a fun ride that I actually liked more than I'd anticipated. It's a solid piece of business all the way through. I'd definitely recommend it if you were on the fence about checking it out.

But more important is the other movie that I saw theatrically. I actually just got home from seeing RiffTrax's latest live event, in which they gave their own acerbic commentary to the one and only Manos: The Hands of Fate. And RiffTrax or not, I actually paid money to see Manos in a movie theater. I think I have problems.

Being a longtime MST3K fan, I knew what I was getting into when I heard they were riffing Manos. The movie is guaranteed to illicit one of two reactions from me. One is disgust, because the movie is a steaming pile of dog feces. The other response is pure excitement and glee, as if the name of the movie alone triggers something in my brain that says, "Manos?! Lemme tell you a little something about this stinkburger..." It's one of those things that I both loathe and cherish wholeheartedly. So the idea of RiffTrax doing a live performance of Manos was something I absolutely had to see.

And you know what? It was unbelievably awesome. I expected it to be a fun time when I bought my ticket and walked into the theater, but I had no idea just how funny the show would be. I can't possibly begin to describe just how great the show was unless you were there to begin with. And if you missed the show, you missed an hour and a half of some of the best entertainment to be shown in a movie theater during 2012.

As bad as the movie is, I'm still thrilled that I got to see RiffTrax tackle Manos on the big screen. It was an experience that I never thought I'd have, but I actually got to see Manos in a movie theater. And in a couple of months, RiffTrax will be doing a live riff of Birdemic. I live in a world where I can see two of the worst movies ever made in a movie theater within a two-month span. Life is awesome.
