"The Final Chapter"? Yeah, Right.

Not long after my previous post, I headed out to see Saw 3D. Why they couldn't just call it Saw VII, I have no idea. Just because it's 3D doesn't mean it has to be part of the title. If you're gonna introduce "3D" into the title of a movie franchise, wouldn't be easier to do so in the third one? I could spend all day arguing about the intricacies of movie titles with "3D" as part of them, but then I'd never get to talking about the actual movie.

So yeah, Saw 3D. I'd been hearing from even the most dedicated of Saw fans that it was pretty bad, so I went in expecting the worst. However, it wasn't as bad as I was anticipating it being. Maybe it was because I had lower expectations than usual, I don't know. But I didn't think it was as bad as it was being made out to be. The flaws will probably be more evident once I end up watching the DVD in a few months, but I can't say that I hated the movie.

While the franchise's transition to 3D was unnecessary, I did like how they used it. It looked really good, really immersive, and better than some other recently-released 3D movies that I've seen. But what I didn't like was the ending. I can't say too much without giving spoilers, but it ended up raising more questions than it answered. You'd think a movie being billed as the final chapter of a franchise would be a bit more conclusive, but that's not the case with Saw 3D. It's like they were hedging their bets in case they change their minds and make Saw VIII next year. And now that it's been announced that the movie is sitting atop the box office rankings, I fully expect another Saw movie. If the Friday the 13th franchise can have two final chapters and Freddy Krueger can have one of his own, then surely Jigsaw can return after what is supposed to be his grand finale.

So anyway, that's my quick opinion of Saw 3D. It's not a tremendously bad movie, but the 3D effects are really the only thing that would make me want to see it theatrically again. I'm going to give it two and a half stars, almost three, and suggest that you just wait for the DVD release.

And speaking of movies, I just thought I'd add to the ending of this post that last weekend, I posted my review of Paranormal Activity 2 over at the S@TM blog. So feel free to go check that out. Anyway, I hope you're having a great Halloween, and will keep on having one.

Happy Halloween!

I know I don't post as much as I used to, but I couldn't let October 31st go by without saying a little something about the first chapter in what I call "The Awesome Holiday Trilogy." It would be wrong of me not to.

I enjoy Halloween so much, I can barely put it into words. I've never gone all out with costumes or decorations or things like that. I don't think I've worn a Halloween costume since I was 12 or 13. But it's a holiday that I cannot help but absolutely love. Between the horror movies and the general wackiness and shenanigans, being a fan of Halloween is practically encoded into my DNA.

Unfortunately, since my social circle is limited to the point of nonexistence, I've only once had the opportunity to go out and do anything for Halloween with friends. It breaks my heart to go every Halloween without having the same kind of fun everyone else is having. It gets lonely, you know? But for 2010, I decided that I had to go my own way and find Halloween fun for myself instead of letting it find me.

So just what did I do? I did the only thing I could do: I went to my third midnight screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show in as many months. I didn't have anyone to tag along with me, sadly, but being surrounded by a sell-out crowd of 800 loonies who were having as much fun as I was totally made up for it. Plus it was the Halloween show, meaning that the cast putting it on was pulling out all the stops. The virgin initiation was crazier than what I'd seen previously, there was a costume contest, and a group of zombies even ran up on stage and danced to Michael Jackson's "Thriller."

Really, I cannot recommend the shows enough. If you're ever in the Lexington, Kentucky area on the last weekend of the month (except this coming December, anyway), you really should attend one of the Rocky Horror screenings at the Kentucky Theater. I'm not getting paid to say this or anything; this is just someone who wants to share in the fun. Take it from me: unless you have a stick crammed so far up your ass you wouldn't know fun if it smacked you upside the head, you'll have a blast.

I know I had a ton of fun. I'll probably even go back next month, just for one more ride on the RHPS Express. And now that I think about it, I'm kinda sad that I didn't have an actual review of the movie itself ready to post over at the S@TM blog today. I'm a little ashamed of myself. Maybe I should slap something together, or at least try.

In any event, have a safe and happy Halloween, and I'll see you later.

Breaking My Writing Records

Wow. I keep saying it, but I really should post here more often. I've been putting off doing so in my quest to actually find something to talk about. But I figure any content is better than no content, so I might as well talk about the reviews I've been posting over at my movie blog. I've had three new reviews over the last week and a half, the movies being Barb Wire, Highlander, and the recently-released Jackass 3D.

In posting the Jackass 3D review, I broke my record for most reviews in a year. The prior record of forty reviews in a year was set all the way back in 2005, and Jackass 3D marks my forty-first for 2010. With two and a half months left in the year, I might be able to even hit fifty. That really surprises me too, because after I got a job, I didn't think I'd have the time to do write reviews. But look at me now, I've got 41 reviews under my belt this year and time for more.

But here's just hoping that I can come up with new material for this blog.

Let's Do The Time Warp Again

I'm ashamed of myself. I really am. I actually have something to talk about for a change, and I've been sitting on it for over a week. I could have whipped up a post the day after it happened, but no, I just had to be lazy. I'm a terrible blogger. Terrible.

But anyway, what happened was I saw another midnight showing of The Rocky Horror Picture Show last weekend. I had just as much fun as I did when I was de-virginized back in August. But what made this one different, though, was that my mom insisted on tagging along. I can't say I know why, since Rocky Horror isn't really her scene. She'd never seen the movie before, and had never really shown any interest in it before. At least, no interest that I could see.

You'll have to ask her why she wanted to come with me, since I still don't know why. But I think she enjoyed herself. I doubt she'd admit it, and she might even deny it, but if you ask me, I think she might have had more fun than she'd had in a while. Will she ever see a midnight screening of Rocky Horror again? Hell no. I doubt she'll ever even watch it on TV or want to borrow my DVD copy of it. But as long as she had fun, I'm okay with that. I hope she did, anyway. Otherwise, I'd be a very sad panda.
