Happy 30th Birthday To Me

Yes, you read that headline correctly. Today is indeed my thirtieth birthday. I'm honestly not sure how to feel about it, either. Part of me does feel older, as I'm at the beginning of another decade of life. But I feel like I've wasted some of that life as well. The friends I had in high school have all moved away and started families; I'm still living with my parents and I've been single for over a decade. I'm a college dropout with a crappy, minimum wage job, and I don't have much else to brag about.

But I have my life and what's left of my health, right? That's something, right? It's better than nothing, anyway. I know I may sound like I'm going through an early mid-life crisis, since all I'm doing is complaining. But I'm actually in quite a good mood. I mean, I only get to say I'm 30 for one year out of my life. And while it's not the milestone event like 16, 18, or 21, it's still special to me.

You know, I still have no idea where I was going to take this post when I started writing it. But I know where I'll take it now. Happy birthday, me. You're awesome.

I'm Pretty Sure Johnny Depp Is A Vampire In Real Life

Wow, three weeks without a post. I'm disappointed with myself yet I'm not surprised either. You'd think that I would have shown up here and raved on and on about The Avengers, but nope. I just posted my review on that other blog of mine and stayed quiet. I'm so lame. (And if you aren't reading that blog, you're lame too.)

But anyway, I've finally got something to talk about here. I was planning on heading to this month's midnight showing of The Rocky Horror Picture Show up in Lexington this past Saturday night, which would have been my first time since my accident in November. But unfortunately, I ended up too tired to go thanks to a combination of my job and my friends.

I was hanging out with some friends after a tiring day at work and they ended up dragging me to see Dark Shadows. I can't say I had any real interest in seeing Dark Shadows, since the commercials did nothing for me and I'd never seen the TV show it was based on. But after being talked into seeing the movie, I must admit that I enjoyed it quite a bit. I've seen better movies, but Dark Shadows still has its share of funny, amusing, and downright entertaining moments.

Practically the entire cast is strong despite the rather unimpressive material they're working with, and Tim Burton's direction is top notch as always. I do wonder, though, how Dark Shadows would have turned out had Burton approached it as a serious drama instead of as a comedy. While the campy, comedic nature of the movie does provide some laughs, I thought it hurt the movie somewhat. Personally, I felt Dark Shadows would have worked better if it had been more serious. Burton's gothic sensibilities could have made it one hell of a movie if it hadn't been so campy, but I guess it's too late to change it now.

All in all, Dark Shadows is an okay movie. It's not great, but it doesn't suck either. It's watchable at the very least. So I'm going to give the movie three stars and suggest you wait until it's on DVD or airing on HBO if you want to see it. And if I can say one thing and only one thing about Dark Shadows, it's that the Alice Cooper is awesome. Every movie needs an Alice Cooper cameo.
