Sigourney Weaver Is Missed

With the summer blockbuster season in full sing, I've been trying to use some of my free time to check out some of Hollywood's latest big releases. But there really hasn't been a lot out there that's done it for me. I loved The Avengers, but outside of that, everything has been either mediocre or I've had no interest in it. I got dragged to see Dark Shadows, and Men in Black 3 was just okay at best. I was hoping for something better when I saw Prometheus yesterday afternoon, but alas, I just got more of the same.

I don't want to say that Prometheus is a bad movie; it's just very flawed. Story elements feel like they're left out, more than a few characters are total morons with no self-preservation instincts, and the movie tries too hard to be profound when there's no reason for it to be. And it doesn't help that the movie's lead actress ― Noomi Rapace, star of the original Girl with the Dragon Tattoo ― just isn't very good at all. It's like her sole purpose in Prometheus was to make the audience sick of her.

But there are some good elements to be found. Charlize Theron and Michael Fassbender contribute fantastic performances, with Fassbender's being particularly fascinating to watch. Prometheus also boasts some gorgeous cinematography and the 3D effects actually help make the movie more visually enticing. Ridley Scott's direction is quite good too, but I just wish he'd had a stronger script to work with.

I'm planning on doing a full review of Prometheus over at my other blog sometime in the near future, so I apologize for this post's brevity. I just wanted to jot down a few notes about the movie here to keep the level of dust on this poor neglected blog at a minimum. I haven't really decided on a star rating for Prometheus yet, like my opinion really matters in the grand scheme of things, but I will tell you this: Do not go into this movie expecting it to be as good as Alien or Aliens. You will be disappointed if you do. That said, it's a movie that I would in fact recommend, but only to the most hardcore sci-fi nerds out there. You guys will get a kick out of it.
